PROVENZA AND CAMARGUE

As promised, here is the photo feature of our gentleman's last travel to Provenza and Camargue.

Let’s start with the Alps of Provenza.

Come promesso, ecco il reportage fotografico dell'ultimo viaggio del nostro gentleman in Provenza e Camargue.

Cominciamo con le Alpi della Provenza.

Here we are in Castellan, a nice village in the middle of the Alps. There is a beautiful bridge built in the Romans age and a little church that rises on the top of a rock high more than 300 metres. Then you can proceed among the mountains and here it is the lake of Saint Croix… in the evening we arrive in Avignone, the city of Popes, and admire the famous Palace of Pope, where resided even 9 Popes.     

Eccoci un bel paesino in mezzo alle alpi. Si chiama Castellan. C'è un bellissimo ponte di epoca romana sul fiume e una chiesetta in cima ad una roccia alta più di trecento metri. Poi si prosegue in mezzo alle alpi e ci troviamo al lago Saint Croix.....per arrivare alla sera ad Avignone, la città dei Papi, con il famoso Palazzo Papale, dove ben nove Papi risiedettero.

Let’s go on with other pics from Avignone. This city lived a period of magnificence when 9 Popes moved their residence from Rome to there. Obviously, it was due to political and strategic alliance reasons.

However, the Church brought to Avignone art, history, richness and fame. We want to share with you some other photos of the main square and of the bridge on Rodano river.

Proseguiamo con Avignone. Questa città visse un periodo di splendore quando ben nove papi spostarono la loro residenza da Roma ad Avignone.

Ovviamente per motivi prettamente politici e legati alle alleanze ed ai domini del periodo. Comunque la Chiesa portò ad Avignone arte, storia, ricchezza, fama.

And here we are at the famous Pont du Gard, on Verdon river. It is the aqueduct built by the Romans 2 thousand-years ago, during Giulio Cesar period, in order to take the water from the Alps to the city of Nimes. What can I say… were not our ancestors fantastic engineers?
Then we arrive in Nimes, a beautiful city with its Temple and the Roman Theather.

Ed eccoci al famoso Pont du Gard, sul fiume Verdon.

E' l'acquedotto che i romani, sotto Giulio Cesare, costruirono più di duemila anni fa per portare l'acqua dalle alpi alla città di Nimes.

Che dire...non erano degli ingegneri fantastici i nostri antenati???

Finché arriviamo a Nimes, con il suo tempio e teatro romano.

Some pictures of Carcassonne by night. The history of this place is really interesting… Lady Carcas resisted to a long siege and succeeded in defending her fellow citizens from the siege of the enemies. Thus Lady Carcas become a heroine and the city was dedicated to her. This is the old city, a fortress surrounded by fortified walls that overlook the new city from on high of a hill.  

An advice to all visitors: it is better go early in the morning otherwise it is very difficult to walk along the medieval streets of the village.

Alcune foto di Carassonne di sera. Interessante la storia di Carcassonne....Lady Carcas resistette ad un lungo assedio e riuscì a proteggere i suoi concittadini dall'assalto dei nemici. Divenne un'eroina e la città è dedicata a lei.

La vecchia città è questa fortezza difesa da mura imponenti che dominano la nuova città dall'alto di una collina.

Consiglio ai visitatori: andate presto al mattino o tardi la sera perché altrimenti si fa fatica a camminare per le stradine medievali del borgo.
